THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH (NATE)

НАЦИОНАЛЬНОЕ ОБЪЕДИНЕНИЕ
ПРЕПОДАВАТЕЛЕЙ АНГЛИЙСКОГО ЯЗЫКА (НОПАЯз)

What is NATE? It is a professional association of teachers of English in Russia working in different regions and at different levels: pre-school, secondary school, higher education, in-service training, additional education. Its mission is to promote English language teaching and to develop the expertise of its members and other ELT professionals in Russia. NATE is an affiliate of TESOL and works in close cooperation with the English Language Office of Public Affairs Section at the USA Embassy in Moscow and the British Council.

When did it start? It started in 1990 under the name of TESOL-Russia within the framework of Moscow Association of Applied Linguistics and in 1997 was officially registered as a non-profit organization with the headquarters at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

What does NATE actually do? The Association holds conferences, organizes seminars, workshops, master-classes. It provides access to all-important information about the up-coming events, both national and international and the opportunity to meet with colleagues and become part of the national and international community. NATE events take place all over the country - that's our strategy. The recent NATE Conference "English in a Multi-Cultural Community" was hosted by Udmurt State University (May 31 - June 3, 2005) and has given a great impetus to ELT theory and practice. The next 12th International NATE Conference will take place in Novosibirsk in June, 2006.

Do I know anyone in NATE? Sure. The President of NATE is Professor S. Ter-Minasova, the Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Lomonosov, Vice-presidents are Prof. M.Verbitskaya of Moscow State University and Prof. M. Sternina of Voronezh State University. NATE has affiliates in different regions headed by well-known professionals.
